With the personal tax filing deadlines now completed, you may hear of more situations in which the CRA is calling taxpayers. It is important to be aware that there are potential scams and to verify the caller is a CRA employee before providing them with any personal information.
So how can you tell if the call is legitimate and not fraud? We recommend that you do the following:
- Tell the caller that you want to verify their identity
- Ask for and note the caller’s agent ID, name, phone number and office location
- Call the CRA official phone number at 1-800-959-8281 and confirm that the call was legitimate
- Once the information is verified with CRA, you can call the caller back and answer their questions
